What is Coaching

Life and Business Coaching Defined

“A collaborative solution-focused, results-orientated and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of work performance, life experience, self-directed learning and personal growth of the coachee.”

Anthony Grant
University of Sydney

The role of a coach is to ask questions, explore options with and support the client to discover or expand their own ability to implement change in pursuit of a specific goal. The coach will work with a client to define goals.

Coaching is goal-oriented

  • Formulate a plan based on the client’s knowledge and skills
  • Hold the client accountable for progress
  • Provide structure, encouragement, and support

How Coaching Works

Coaching is not counseling or therapy. These are done by professionals trained and licensed specifically for these functions. Therapy typically focuses on dysfunction. Counseling advises. Coaching supports the client in enhancing everyday functioning leveraging the client’s own knowledge and awareness rather than the coach’s. Coaching focuses on the future and moving forward, rather than referencing the past to gain understanding.
